Microbial Mats in T H E Inland Saline Lakes of Spain
نویسنده
چکیده
The Iberian Peninsula possesses a particular richness of inland saline lakes which mainly occur in three endorheic regions in Aragón, La Mancha and Andalucía. The distribution of benthic microbial mat communities in these lakes is described and related to the ionic composition, salinity fluctuations, inundation period and sediment features. It was found that the cyanobacterium Microco1eu.s chthonoplastes is the most widespread species that occurs under a whole range of environmental conditions among which e.g., high Na+, high Mg2+ and high pH. The species composition and the annual cycle is described in more detail for four different mat types. Finally, the scientific and naturalistic values of the microbial mats in inland lakes are discussed. We propose that the presence of interesting microbial communities should be used as an important element for wetland conserva-

Microbial biodiversity in saline shallow lakes of the Monegros Desert, Spain.
The Monegros Desert contains one of the largest sets of inland saline lakes in Europe constituting a threatened landscape of great scientific and ecological value with large number of reported endemisms. We analyzed bacteria, archaea, and microbial eukaryotes from 11 saline lakes in winter and spring by rRNA gene fingerprinting and sequencing covering large salinity (2.7-22.1%) and temperature ...
متن کاملHigh Genetic Diversity and Novelty in Eukaryotic Plankton Assemblages Inhabiting Saline Lakes in the Qaidam Basin
Saline lakes are intriguing ecosystems harboring extremely productive microbial communities in spite of their extreme environmental conditions. We performed a comprehensive analysis of the genetic diversity (18S rRNA gene) of the planktonic microbial eukaryotes (nano- and picoeukaryotes) in six different inland saline lakes located in the Qaidam Basin. The novelty level are high, with about 11....
متن کاملBiodiversity of Archaea and floral of two inland saltern ecosystems in the Alto Vinalopó Valley, Spain
BACKGROUND The extraction of salt from seawater by means of coastal solar salterns is a very well-described process. Moreover, the characterization of these environments from ecological, biochemical and microbiological perspectives has become a key focus for many research groups all over the world over the last 20 years. In countries such as Spain, there are several examples of coastal solar sa...
متن کاملA physico-chemical survey of inland lakes and saline ponds: Christmas Island (Kiritimati) and Washington (Teraina) Islands, Republic of Kiribati
The equatorial Pacific Ocean atoll islands of Kiritimati and Teraina encompass great physical, chemical and biological variability within extreme lacustrine environments. Surveys of lake chemistry and sediments revealed both intra- and inter-island variability. A survey of more than 100 lakes on Kiritimati found salinities from nearly fresh to 150 ppt with the highest values occurring within th...
متن کاملLake La Salada de Chiprana (NE Spain), an Example of an Athalassic Salt Lake in a Cultural Landscape
On a global scale, athalassic inland salt lakes are abundant, albeit restricted to semiarid and arid climates. La Salada de Chiprana is unique in Western Europe, because it is a permanent and relatively deep (up to 5.6 m) hypersaline lake (40–90 g total dissolved salt L–1) since 1700 AD. It forms part of a cultural landscape, which imposes a chal‐ lenge for management. The aim of this paper is ...
